KOA

I pulled up outside the yellow and black KOA sign. A place I had been wondering about for years. My mom and dad had worked at this camp before my sister and I were born and I have heard many warm and fond memories of their time there.

My mom's cousin is the owner of the place and had reserved for me a "Deluxe Luxury Cabin" a habitation that was not there when my mom and dad worked there and one of the fanciest campground accommodations I have ever experienced.

That night I enjoyed walking around and smelling the campfires of the other campers. A movie was being projected and children and families were enjoying it amongst the woods.

The next morning my mom's cousin and her husband graciously showed me around Colonial Williamsburg and took me out for breakfast. It was great to catch up with them, well actually to meet them, as my family is quite large and I don't get to see the members that don't live on the West or Jersey too often. I got a chance to know them and see the ways that the campground has changed and grown over the years. Later that day I saw the area of where the campground originally was. What used to be a place that served about 60 sites has space now for over a thousand guests on busy nights.

As my days went on there I walked the campground at night and watched the lightning bugs dance across the tree scape, hovering, floating, magic.

My mom's cousin had arranged for me to do a workshop one afternoon as one of the optional camp activities that her KOA offers families in the afternoon.

Many families during the day go out to Busch Gardens or other local attractions and the campground likes to provide them with quiet things that can be done in the evening as they are settling back in. I got to work with the children of three different families and hear their stories as we worked.
