When the dog gets out

You can go to a place with no plans but already have an intention so set that when a dog gets loose a workshop takes place. The Universe is always conspiring, let it.

Got to Savannah, Georgia. I didn't know anyone in the area and had quickly booked an airbnb the night before. We had thought that I had a distant cousin that lived in Savannah, Georgia. Turns out I have a distant cousin that lives in Georgia with a daughter named Savannah.

My cousin was very kind but it turns out his home was in a part of Georgia that would be about 5 hours out of the way I was headed at the time. So I arrived in a home in Savannah, when I got there no one was home. The owner came back a little later with her dog. When we went inside the dog stayed out and about, not ready to come in yet. Soon a knock came on the door and a young boy from the neighborhood was at the door bringing the dog back. Soon there were two boys with the dog and they came in and explained that their dog had surgery and couldn't play with this dog for a little while.

They sat down and started to hang out. I had been in the middle of explaining to the woman I was staying with about my project, so I continued to explain to the boys. I asked if they would like to be a part of it and they were very eager to want to join.

I showed them books from Guatemala of other children that had participated in the project and told them that these same materials were used by the children in Guatemala and Ghana and all across the United States.

"You mean our hands are touching the very same things they used?" They asked.

"I think that is the coolest part, that we get to use the same things they did, and be connected to them."

A little while later one boy excused himself and said he would be right back. When we returned he had a plastic bag that he handed me.

"Here, this is for you, for the project." Inside the bag was a box of crayons, colored pencils and a full sketchbook. "I used these for my school this year and I want to pass them on, so other kids can get to use my materials and I can be a part of it."

I almost cried. The thought of this, the appreciation of the connection, the generosity of the gesture. So humbling.
